Season 2

Painter’s Lodge

Campbell River, British Columbia

by Susie Lee

Campbell River’s tourism catch phrase is “Discover Your True Nature.” With a population of 32,000, this city is located on the east coast of Central Vancouver Island, nestled between the mountains and waters of the Strait of Georgia.

Elk Falls Provincial Park

Elk Falls Provincial Park is a waterfall destination located west of Campbell River on Vancouver Island. All year long, many visitors flock here to witness the magnificent waterfall that cascades 25-meters into a deep rock walled canyon. It is a natural spectacle that can be enjoyed from the viewing platforms conveniently set up near the falls to give onlookers a spectacular view of the waterfall, the canyon and the river.

I veered off the dirt path and walked on to the rocky boulders off where the start of the water began to slowly make its way toward the cliff. Very rarely will people be able to get this view and angle of the waterfalls. It was so awesome to get so close to the falls and touch the cold water as it cascaded down.

This park is home to many varieties of wildlife, so be aware and use caution. It’s always a good idea to pack water, snacks and extra light clothing when hiking. And be respectful to the environment by packing out your trash with you. This easy hike to Elk Falls takes approximately 45-minutes (round trip), to the falls and back.

Painter’s Lodge

Painter’s Lodge is a full service fishing lodge that features adventure excursions, a restaurant for fine dining, a pub, and an open sitting area to exchange fishing tales. The lodge has 90 rooms, 4 private cabins, and a variety of suites to accommodate your needs. You can choose from rooms with an ocean or a garden view. The west coast style rooms are available in single or split level lofts, the perfect accommodations to share with family or friends. You can also ask for the VIP and Presidential Suites. My suite was equipped with a kitchenette, bathroom, living room, TV and bedroom. The suite had a wrap around balcony overlooking the ocean, with a view across to Quadra Island.

I enjoyed strolling through the lodge and looking at the pictures on the walls of famous celebrities who have been lured to this lodge. John Wayne, Bob Hope and Goldie Hawn are just a few of the celebrities who have stayed and fished at Painter’s Lodge.

There are many amenities that guests can enjoy while staying at Painter’s Lodge including an outdoor pool and hot tub, tennis courts, a fitness room, complimentary online access, and dining options ranging from west coast cuisine at Legend’s Dining room to pub-style meals at the Tyee Pub.
